In the midst of the public’s suspicion regarding his acceptance and scholarship awards with 30 different colleges in the US and UK, Filipino student Julian Martir eventually breaks his silence.

The 20-year-old gained notoriety after sharing on major TV news programs and online news portals that he had been admitted and had gotten a scholarship from 30 different colleges in the US and UK, totaling $1.9 million (about P104 million).

When he recently gave an interview and struggled to articulate the rationale for his decision to pursue the academic path he had suggested, the public began to doubt his statements.

His old mater, Negros Occidental High School (NOHS), which was also addressed in the interview, said they could not substantiate Martir’s assertions because they do not have “first-hand information” on the subject, which only increased the mistrust toward him.

He also alluded to an “issue” that arose in 2021 in relation to a social media post he made on data privacy, which led him to assert that his history does not define who he is today. He did not, however, go into further detail regarding this “issue.”

In response to a question on his application process, he stated that he submitted all of his forms online. “Just to make my statement clear din po, all of the universities I applied to are true po,” he remarked.

“Binigay ko po, pati sarili ko binigay ko,” said the speaker. Martir continued, (“It’s like I sold my soul.”)

Due to all of these, Martir became the target of criticism on social media, where some internet users referred to him as a phony.

Martir said that all of his credentials, college applications, and scholarships are legitimate in his most recent interview with News5.

He remarked, “I hope everyone will stop accusing me, or kung ano-ano man yung sinasabi ng mga ibang tao, [or whatever it is that other people are saying about me].”

He was also questioned about the universities’ responses to his application, to which he said, “Too bad about the 30 universities I didn’t apply to. They will always respond to your emails with the identical statement that your scholarship application is being reviewed. [I did apply to 30 universities; it’s true. Even if you email them repeatedly, they will always respond by saying that they have already evaluated your application.

Eight institutions acknowledged that Martir’s admittance is real with them, with five of them verifying that he was offered admission, according to an updated post from another news source that also disclosed that it had checked with the 30 different universities that Martir had previously declared.

The eight universities mentioned are:

  • Ohio Wesleyan University
  • Alfred University
  • Woodbury University
  • Webster University
  • Ball State University
  • University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
  • Michigan Technological University
  • University of Massachusetts Boston

On May 22, a different news outlet reported that Julian Martir’s school was still trying to validate everything and that they were unable to immediately corroborate the statements the kid had made because they had access to first-hand information, but that they would be delighted if they were confirmed.

Regarding people who are criticizing him, he asks them to refrain from making derogatory remarks about him since “you do not know about me, you do not know what I have gone through,” he stated.
