The road ahead for Gilas Pilipinas appears challenging as they gear up for a shot at securing a coveted spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The recent FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament draw held at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland on November 28 (Manila time) set the stage, revealing a tough journey for the Filipino squad.
Pitted in Group A, the Philippine team finds itself up against formidable opponents from Europe: world-ranked No. 23, Georgia, and the impressive No. 8, Latvia. The latter, one of the hosting nations, will intensify the challenge during the qualifying tournaments scheduled from July 2 to 7 next year in Riva. Meanwhile, the alternate group comprises Brazil (No.12), Montenegro (No. 17), and the pre-qualifying tournament victors, Cameroon (No. 67).

The tournament format outlines a single round-robin for each team within their group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the crossover semifinals, setting the stage for an intense showdown where a Paris Games slot awaits the victors.
Gilas Pilipinas faces an uphill battle, squaring off against adversaries who showcased superior performance compared to their own in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Latvia notably secured the fifth position in the World Cup standings, trailing closely behind Team USA. Despite the absence of NBA star Kristaps Porzingis, the Latvian hosts stunned France in the initial rounds, setting the tone for an unexpected surge. Spearheaded by NBA talent Davis Bertans, Latvia clinched victories against top-ranked Spain and Brazil in the subsequent rounds, ultimately succumbing to eventual champions Germany in the quarterfinals but dominating classification matches against Italy and Lithuania.
Meanwhile, Georgia culminated its maiden World Cup venture at No. 16, advancing to the second round after trailing behind Slovenia, led by the exceptional Luka Doncic, in the initial phase.
In contrast, Gilas Pilipinas encountered a challenging journey in the global spectacle, culminating in a hard-fought 95-76 victory over archrival China, securing the 24th spot.
Despite a lackluster World Cup performance, the Filipino squad redeemed themselves with a stellar performance in the Asian Games, albeit with a revamped roster and under interim coach Tim Cone, following Chot Reyes’ resignation post-World Cup.
Other host nations Spain (No. 2), Greece, and Puerto Rico are set to stage their own battles in pursuit of Olympic berths, hosting competitive lineups in different venues, each seeking a chance to secure their spots on the Olympic stage.

As Gilas Pilipinas braces for an arduous journey towards Olympic qualification, the stage is set for an enthralling showdown, promising fierce competition and an unwavering pursuit of the Paris Olympics dream amidst daunting opposition.
