In a thrilling showcase of skill and resilience, the Strong Group, led by former Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard, triumphed over Homenetmen-Lebanon with a score of 104-95 in the 2024 Dubai International Basketball Championship at the Al Nasr Club on Sunday, Jan. 21 (Manila time). The victory marked the team’s third consecutive win, solidifying their standing as a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.

The game witnessed a fierce battle between Strong Group and a determined Homenetmen-Lebanon, headlined by the impressive performance of ex-Meralco Bolts import Zach Lofton, who poured in 37 points despite ending on the losing side. However, it was Dwight Howard, the NBA champion, who emerged as the guiding force for the Philippine squad, contributing 32 points with a staggering 12-of-13 shooting inside. Howard’s impact extended beyond scoring, with a stellar defensive display of seven rebounds and five crucial blocks.

As the game unfolded, it became clear that this wasn’t just a one-man show. Filipino naturalized center Andray Blatche came alive in the fourth quarter, exploding for 18 points, including five three-pointers, when Strong Group needed it the most. UAAP star Kevin Quiambao continued to impress, showcasing his finesse with a well-rounded performance of 19 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

The supporting cast of imports, Andre Roberson and McKenzie Moore, played pivotal roles with Dwight, contributing 13 and 12 points, respectively. Unlike their previous encounters, Strong Group faced a first-half crisis, trailing Homenetmen for most of it. However, they rallied towards the end of the third quarter, regaining control and setting the stage for a thrilling final period.

Blatche’s remarkable four consecutive triples in the fourth quarter propelled Strong Group to an 87-79 lead, but Zach Lofton’s relentless pursuit kept Homenetmen-Lebanon within striking distance. The game reached a climax when, with 2:38 left, Lofton scored his 14th point, narrowing the gap to five points at 96-91. However, in a moment of brilliance, Quiambao silenced any hopes of a comeback with a last-minute triple, sealing the victory with an emphatic slam.

This nail-biting encounter capped Strong Group’s triumphant three-day playdate, which began with an 82-66 victory over the UAE national team and an 89-67 drubbing of Al Wahda Syria. The team’s resilience and adaptability were on full display as they navigated through different challenges in each game.

As the Group B standings now see Strong Group and Al Ahli Tripoli leading with three wins each, the Charles Tiu-coached squad is set to enjoy a well-deserved one-day rest before facing Sports Club Beirut on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 1:15 a.m. (Manila time). Tiu’s strategic prowess and the team’s collective effort have undoubtedly played a crucial role in the success of their eight well-executed plans, ensuring a perfect streak in the Dubai tournament.
