Carlos Yulo, the 23-year-old Filipino gymnast, has once again proven his prowess in the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships by bagging the individual all-around silver medal. The event was held on June 15, 2021, at the OCBC Arena in Singapore. This is the second consecutive year that he won the silver medal in the said competition. With this finish, Yulo will be representing the Philippines in the World Championships in Belgium in September, which will serve as his lone chance to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Yulo showcased his exceptional talent and skill in the competition’s different apparatuses, qualifying for the finals in five categories, namely: parallel bars, floor, vault, still rings, and horizontal bar. He garnered a total of 85.930 points in the men’s individual all-around, landing him between Japanese gymnasts Shinnosuke Oka and Takeru Kitazono, who won the gold and bronze medals, respectively.
The Filipino gymnast displayed excellent performances throughout the competition, with his best score of 15.066 points in parallel bars, followed by 14.966 points in the floor exercise and 14.866 points in the vault. In still rings, he scored 14.300 points, placing second, while he landed ninth in the horizontal bar, with 13.466 points.
Yulo also secured a spot in the finals of the floor, vault, and parallel bars, which he won last year in Qatar. However, only two gymnasts per federation are allowed to compete in the finals, with China and Japan having three gymnasts each in the horizontal bar top eight. Yulo managed to take the remaining berth, proving his worth in the sport.
In the recently concluded team event, Yulo and his crew from the Philippines consisting of Juancho Miguel Besana, Ivan Cruz, Justine Ace de Leon, and Jann Gwynn Timbang had a decent finish, ranking seventh with a score of 237.193 points. The Chinese team dominated the competition, earning an impressive 256.762 points, followed by Japan and Kazakhstan, who secured silver and bronze medals with scores of 256.694 and 246.282 points, respectively.
Besana also participated in all six events in the individual all-around category, finishing in the 28th position with a total score of 73.531 points. Despite this, Yulo’s exceptional performance assured him of a spot in the upcoming World Championships that will be held in Belgium. This event will be his only opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
