National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Chief Medardo De Lemos has issued a public apology following a controversial “sexy dance” performance that took place during a post-conference gathering on June 30. The incident has sparked an internal investigation to determine the responsible parties behind the inclusion of the dancers.
Expressing regret during a news conference, De Lemos acknowledged the potential offensiveness of the performance, particularly to the sensibilities of the public, especially women. He emphasized the NBI’s commitment to identifying those accountable for allowing such an inappropriate act to occur and affirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance policy towards indecency.
De Lemos stated, “We will thoroughly investigate this error and ensure that appropriate action is taken. We will not hesitate to take disciplinary measures, including dismissal if necessary.”
The nature of the performance drew attention from the Department of Justice (DOJ), which announced its intention to investigate the incident. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, in a press briefing, expressed his disapproval, deeming the dance as a form of misbehavior that the country does not condone. The viral video capturing the performance prompted swift action from the DOJ.
Members of the Senate also condemned the “sexy dance” and expressed their dismay over the incident. Senators Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito described the performance as both immoral and inappropriate for a government agency event. Dela Rosa, via text message, asserted that the act was not only immoral but potentially illegal, while Ejercito expressed disbelief and called the performance wholly unwarranted.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III announced his intention to address the NBI regarding the incident during the upcoming budget deliberations. Pimentel expressed his concern and stated his plan to seek answers from the NBI to ensure accountability.
In response to the controversy, comedian Long Mejia, who was present at the event alongside the dancers, defended their performance. Mejia, in an interview, clarified that there was nothing lewd about the dance routine, asserting that it was similar to what the dancers had previously showcased on national television. He expressed his belief that the criticism and outrage were unwarranted, emphasizing that he did not witness anything inappropriate during the performance.
Mejia’s video documentation of the event, shared on his vlog, contributed to the widespread attention surrounding the “sexy dance” incident.
As the investigation progresses, the NBI faces the task of addressing the concerns raised by the public, government officials, and other stakeholders. The agency’s swift response and commitment to uncovering the responsible individuals indicate their dedication to maintaining professionalism and respectability within the organization.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding appropriate conduct and ensuring that public institutions consistently reflect the values and expectations of the communities they serve. As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future and reinforce public confidence in the NBI’s commitment to upholding its integrity.
