The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a cautionary statement to the public regarding certain glow-in-the-dark lato-lato products that have not been notified to the agency. These unnotified products may pose potential health risks, according to the FDA. The agency has stressed the importance of ensuring that these products undergo a thorough quality and safety evaluation process before buying or using them. In an advisory dated June 13, the FDA specifically pointed out the “LATO LATO TOYS WITH HANDLE GLOW IN THE DARK”, “LATTO LATTO TOY TOY”, “TOK TOK OLD SCHOOL TOY”, “ETEK TOY LATO LATO MAKASAR” as products to avoid.

Based on postmarketing surveillance conducted by the FDA, it was discovered that the product did not have a valid Certificate of Product Notification as of June 5. This action violates the FDA Act of 2009 which forbids the manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, promotion, advertising, or sponsorship of any health product without proper authorization.

To ensure the safety and well-being of consumers, the FDA cannot guarantee the quality and safety of unnotified toy and childcare article (TCCA) products. These products may pose significant health risks as they could be substandard and possibly adulterated. The use of such toys may lead to various hazards like endocrine disruption, injury, choking, suffocation, and reproductive or developmental effects due to small or broken parts.

As a responsible regulatory agency, the FDA strongly recommends that customers check whether their purchased products have undergone the notification process through the FDA Verification Portal available on the website. This extra step ensures that the products they buy are safe and free from any potential health risks.

Moreover, it is crucial to note that young children, especially those aged three years and below, are more vulnerable to the health risks posed by unnotified toys. Children use their mouths to explore their environment, which makes them more prone to accidental ingestion or choking on small parts of these toys. The consequences of such incidents could pose severe harm to the child.

In light of this warning, it is imperative to prioritize safety and vigilance when purchasing toys for ourselves or our loved ones. We must ensure that the products we buy have undergone quality and safety evaluation and have been authorized by regulatory agencies like the FDA. As responsible consumers, we must prioritize our health and safety above everything else. By taking such precautions, we can prevent potential health risks and promote a safer environment for everyone in the community.
