December has emerged as the leading month for tying the knot among Filipinos, marking a shift from the more traditional notion of June weddings. Recent data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) has unveiled a fascinating trend: December surpasses other months as the most preferred time for matrimonial celebrations, capturing the hearts of 55,599 couples in 2022.

While June has long been associated with weddings, deeply rooted in Western culture and historical Roman customs, it seems that December’s allure has gained momentum in the Philippine matrimonial landscape. Mrs. S, a seasoned wedding planner and proprietor of The S Events by Spaghetti 88 Revisa, noted that this shift aligns with the avoidance of June due to the onset of the rainy season, dissuading couples from selecting it as their special month for union.
“The intertwining of Western tradition and Filipino customs is truly fascinating,” expressed Mrs. S, reflecting on the evolution of preferences in wedding months. She further elaborated that December’s charm extends beyond mere sentimentality. The month’s association with holiday bonuses proves to be an enticing factor, influencing many couples in their decision to exchange vows amidst the festive cheer.

Contrary to the prevalent belief that June weddings bring blessings and prosperity, PSA’s data has decisively placed December at the helm of matrimonial choices, demonstrating a shift in preferences among the populace. The figures highlight December’s dominance, constituting a notable 12.4% of the total registered marriages in the country for the year 2022.
In a surprising turn, February closely followed December with 52,426 unions, accounting for an 11.7% share, while April secured the third spot with 44,600 marriages, standing at 9.9% of the total. Notably, June, despite its historical significance in wedding traditions, fell behind in fourth place, witnessing 44,043 matrimonial celebrations, encompassing 9.8% of the overall tally according to PSA’s findings.

The surge in marriages across the nation in 2022, totaling 449,428 unions, reflects a remarkable 25.9% increase from the preceding year’s figure of 356,839. This substantial rise even demonstrates a notable 4% increase when compared to pre-pandemic statistics from 2019 to 2022.
Delving deeper into regional disparities, CALABARZON emerged as the frontrunner with the highest count of registered marriages, recording 63,838 unions, constituting a significant 14.2% share. Following closely behind, the National Capital Region (NCR) secured the second position with 54,629 marriages, representing 12.2% of the total, while Central Luzon claimed the third spot with 50,633 unions, marking an 11.3% share.
Conversely, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) witnessed the lowest count of registered marriages, standing at a mere 3,432, contributing a modest 0.8% to the overall tally, showcasing varying matrimonial trends across different regions of the country.

As December continues to reign supreme in the hearts of Filipinos choosing their special month for matrimonial celebrations, this shift from traditional June weddings reflects not only evolving preferences but also the influence of cultural adaptations and practical considerations in embracing the joyous union of hearts.
