Apple took the top spot from Samsung as the leading smartphone seller worldwide in 2023, with a 20% market share, per International Data Corp.

Samsung slipped to second place with a 19.4% share, followed by Xiaomi, Oppo, and Transsion from China.

The change occurred amidst a tough year for smartphone sales, with consumers delaying upgrades due to economic uncertainties. China’s slow recovery also impacted overall phone sales.

Only Apple and Transsion saw sales growth among the top five vendors, despite the market shrinking by 3.2% to 1.17 billion units.

Apple’s iPhone shipments rose by 3.7%, while Samsung’s fell by 13.6% in 2023.

Apple faces competition in China from Huawei and budget Chinese brands, prompting discounts of up to 5% on certain models.

Meanwhile, Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s most valuable public company on concerns over iPhone demand.
