As the festive season beckons, Scam Watch Pilipinas and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) have unveiled a proactive initiative, “Holiday Watch PH,” to fortify the Filipino community against rising cyber scams. This innovative campaign, launched at the National Cybercrime Hub, aims to combat the escalating issue of scams during the holiday season, an area where the Philippines holds a disconcerting top position among 11 Asian countries, according to recent CICC findings.

Undersecretary Alexander Ramos, the Executive Director of CICC, highlighted the imperative nature of public education regarding prevalent scams amidst the fervent Christmas shopping spree, signaling a critical concern. Concurrently, Jocel De Guzman, Co-Lead Convenor of Scam Watch, underscored the campaign’s mission: equipping individuals with digital literacy and cyber hygiene to navigate online activities judiciously, be it shopping, donations, or other engagements.

“The Filipino enthusiasm for early and generous Christmas celebrations makes us vulnerable to scams while splurging on gifts for our loved ones,” De Guzman stated, elucidating the driving force behind this vigilant campaign.

The heart of the event unveiled the “12 scams of Christmas,” a comprehensive guide to recognize and thwart common fraudulent schemes. De Guzman elucidated on various fraudulent tactics, including counterfeit shipping notifications masquerading as legitimate companies to obtain personal details. He cautioned against divulging sensitive information without confirming the legitimacy of such messages.

Drawing attention to fake charity scams and deceptive e-commerce platforms, De Guzman emphasized the importance of scrutinizing website URLs and refraining from clicking dubious links to evade potential phishing attacks.

Highlighting the risks associated with unknown online sellers, De Guzman advised against upfront payments to unfamiliar vendors, particularly on platforms like Facebook Marketplace. The campaign further illuminated threats encompassing free trial deceptions, faux Christmas gift card ploys, tech support hoaxes, and dubious investment schemes, urging citizens to exercise prudence while navigating such offers.

De Guzman urged caution against cryptocurrency and foreign exchange investment scams, emphasizing the allure of high returns as a red flag. Additionally, the campaign shed light on dating scams targeting individuals via dating apps, urging verification before succumbing to requests for money. Similarly, caution was advised against loan scams promising immediate financial gains.

Despite the global nature of scams, Ramos acknowledged that the country’s primary challenge lies in online shopping scams, urging a collaborative effort to combat this issue. He stressed the importance of swift action while reassuring the ongoing quest for solutions in alignment with global endeavors.

Encouraging proactive measures, De Guzman urged the public to report cyber fraud to the Inter-Agency Response Center (I-ARC) via hotline 1326. He highlighted the four released attitudes – Magdamot (be stingy), magduda (be suspicious), mang-snob (be discerning), and magsumbong (report) – as proactive tools to counter fraudulent activities.
